At a Dinner Party

Some days ago Mr. and Mrs. Smith invited their friends to dinner. It was just a small dinner party for four of their friends.

The guests arrived at about six o’clock and were shown into the neat sitting room. There they were offered to sit down in comfortable armchairs and Mrs. Smith poured ¹ drinks for them.

In half an hour dinner was ready and guests were invited into the dinning room. Mrs. Smith is a splendid housewife and the dining room table, laid by her, looked very beautiful. It was covered with a white tablecloth and in the middle of it stood a vase with wonderful autumn flowers.

Mrs. Smith put the right number of knifes, forks, spoons and glasses for each person. The knives and the soup spoons were placed on the right hand side and the forks on the left. The spoons for dessert were placed across the top ². On the left of each person there also was a table napkin and a plate for bread.

Everybody took his seat and the dinner began. The host was sitting at the head of the table, and the hostess was at the other end. The guests were sitting on either side ³, facing each other.

For the first course Mrs. Smith, who cooked everything herself, served cabbage soup. When the soup was finished, fish was brought for the main course, followed by roast chicken with mashed potatoes and salad. For dessert a large chocolate pudding was brought and placed in the middle of the table. Everything was delicious and the guests made many kind remarks ⁴ about Mrs. Smith’s cooking. They said she was a wonderful cook.

The conversation at the table was very interesting and lively ⁵. There was plenty of laughter ⁶ and humour ⁷ during the dinner. The hostess didn’t let the men talk about business and politics all the time. She managed to maintain the conversation and to serve the dinner at one and the same time.

When dinner was over ⁸ the Smiths and their guests went to the sitting room. There coffee, cheese and biscuits were served. Mr. Smith asked permission from his guests to switch on the tape recorder and suggested that the guests listen to a new recording ⁹, which he liked very much.

At about half past eleven the guests decided to go home. The Smiths saw them off at the garden gate ¹⁰. The guests thanked them for a pleasant evening and drove off.
