Memory

If you do not use your arms or your legs for some times, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows this, and nobody would think of questioning this fact. Yet there are many people who do not seem to know 1 that the memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly, either consciously or unconsciously. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough opportunity to become strong. The position is exactly the same as of two people, one of whom exercises his arms and legs by playing tennis, while the other sits in a chair or a motor car all day.

If a friend complains that his arms are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think his parents are to blame 2, or that he is just unlucky, and few of us realize that it is just as much his own fault 3 as if it was his arms and legs that were weak. Not all of us can become extremely strong or extremely clever; but all of us can, if we have ordinary bodies and brains, improve our strength and our memory by the same means – practice.

Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have better memories that those who can? Why is this? Of course, because those who cannot read or write have to remember things: they cannot write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember dates, times, and prices, names, songs and stories; so their memory is the whole time being exercised 4. So if you want a good memory, learn to practice remembering.

Words and Word Combinations:

1 do not seem to know – по-видимому, не знают

2 his parents are to blame – нужно винить его родителей

3 just as much his own fault – в той же мере его собственная вина

4 is being exercised – тренируются

In the Supermarket

A short time ago people used to go to various small shops for different kinds of food. At the baker’s shop we used to buy wheat and rye bread, rolls, buns and bread-rings. At the grocer’s we could buy sausage, cheese, ham, bacon, flour, sugar, cereals, sunflower oil and eggs. If we needed vegetables or fruit, we could go to the greengrocer’s shop. There we could find a wide choice of potatoes, onions, carrots, cabbage, tomatoes and cucumbers. We could also buy there oranges, tangerines, bananas, grapefruits, apples, kiwi-fruits, pears, grapes, plums and peaches. Butcher’s shops could offer us different kinds of meat (pork, beef, mutton) and poultry. When we wanted to buy dairy products, such as milk, butter, cottage-cheese, cream and sour cream we used to go to the dairy shops. At the confectioner’s they were selling all sorts of sweets, chocolates, biscuits, cakes, pies, ice cream and fruit juices. So, sometimes it took us a lot of time to buy everything we needed.

Nowadays there is another kind of shop – a supermarket, which helps us save time. It is a huge shop, the purpose of which is to provide customers with different kinds of food. Because of its greater size, the supermarket is also able to offer a much wider selection of goods than small shops.

Most of the supermarkets are self-service shops without any shop assistants in them. The goods there, most of which are ready-paced, are tidily and attractively arranged on the long lines of shelves.

When a customer enters the supermarket he takes a wire basket or a metal trolley for things he is going to buy. He walks from self to shelf, choosing the tins, packets or boxes of food and putting them into his wire basket or metal trolley. At last he takes them to the checkout and pays the cashier. Usually the food in a supermarket is cheaper than in a small shop because the manager has no assistants to pay.

Many supermarkets, especially abroad, offer services, too, such as a bank, a travel agency, a theatre ticket agency, and even a photographer’s, At a supermarket snack bar tired and hungry customers can sit down, relax and enjoy a fresh cup of coffee. They can also buy snacks and cold drinks from vending machines. It is all very convenient.

In our county supermarkets without a doubt are becoming more and more popular. A great number of people visit them every day to enjoy a wide variety of goods and good service.
