SPECIALIST READING A: Instrumentation Engineering

10. Read the text. 5 parts have been removed from the text. Complete the text by matching the removed parts 1 – 5 with the gaps a) – e). There is one extra part which you do not need to use.

1. These parameters include: pressure, either differential or static, flow, temperature, levels of liquids etc., density, viscosity, other mechanical properties of

materials, properties of ionizing radiation, frequency,

current Voltage, inductance, capacitance, resistivity, chemical composition, chemical properties, properties of light, vibration, weight.

2. Now a process operator could sit in front of a screen and monitor thousands of points throughout a large unit or complex.

3. Instrumentation can also refer to handheld devices that measure some desired variable. Diverse handheld instrumentation is common in laboratories, but can be found in the household as well.

4. We use a Pressure to Current converter in the petrochemical industries to measure and show the amount of pressure developed by the Liquefied Petroleum Gas, crude oil, petrol, and various other petroleum byproducts.

5. They are responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of instruments and entire instrumentation systems considered being the eyes and ears of any industrial undertaking.

6. Later years the actual controllers were moved to a central room and signals were sent into the control room to monitor the process. These controllers and indicators were mounted on a wall called a control board.

Instrumentation engineering is one of the complicated but sophisticated branches of engineering discipline which may be studied as a separate branch or along with electronics engineering. The study mainly focuses on the design, configuration and automated systems. The professionals who are involved in these activities

are known as instrumentation engineers. Instrumentation engineers usually work in

industries with automated processes, such as chemical or manufacturing plants with the goal of improving system productivity, reliability and stability. a) _____ The type of instruments needed for ensuring better quality and efficiency of the end product are decided by an instrumentation engineer, responsible for installation and commissioning as well as trouble shooting.

Instrumentation technologists, technicians and mechanics specialize in troubleshooting and repairing and maintenance of instruments and instrumentation systems. This trade is so intertwined with electricians, pipefitters, power engineers, and engineering companies, that one can find him/herself in extremely diverse working situations.

Instrumentation itself is defined as the art and science of measurement and control of systems. An instrument is a device that measures and/or regulates physical quantity/process variables such as flow, temperature, level, or pressure. Instruments include many varied contrivances that can be as simple as valves and transmitters, and as complex as analyzers. Instruments often comprise control systems of varied processes such as refineries, factories, and vehicles. The control of processes is one of the main branches of applied instrumentation. b) _____ For example, a smoke detector is a common instrument found in most western homes.

Output instrumentation includes devices such as solenoids, valves, regulators, circuit breakers, and relays. These devices control a desired output
