TRAVELLING

Millions of people all over the world spend their holidays travelling. They travel to see other countries and continents, modern cities and the ruins of ancient towns, they travel to enjoy picturesque places, or just for a change of scene. It's always interesting to discover new things, different ways of life, to meet different people, to try different food, to listen to different musical rhythms.

Those who live in the country like to go to a big city and spend their time visiting museums and art galleries, looking at shop windows and dining at exotic restaurants. City-dwellers usually like a quiet holiday by the sea or in the mountains, with nothing to do but walk and bathe and laze in the sun.

Most travellers and holiday-makers take a camera with them and take pictures of everything that interests them — the sights of a city, old churches and castles, views of mountains, lakes, valleys, plains, waterfalls, forests; different kinds of trees, flowers and plants, animals and birds.

Later, perhaps years later, they will be reminded by the photos of the happy time they have had.

People travel by train, by plane, by boat and by car.

All means of travel have their advantages and disadvantages. And people choose one according to their plans and destinations.

If we are fond of travelling, we see and learn a lot of things that we can never see or learn at home, though we may read about them in books and newspapers, and see pictures of them on TV. The best way to study geography is to travel, and the best way to get to know and understand people is to meet them in their own homes.

LESSON FOURTEEN (14)
FOURTEENTH (14TH) LESSON

PART 1

The country

We haven't seen the Hunts for a long time. We were all in Geneva at the same time. They were our neighbours. Our children were friends of their children. I was the manager of a bank in Geneva. Now I'm working for a different bank in London. Our home was in Hampstead until last year. We're living in Sussex now. We had a lovely flat in Hampstead but we weren't
happy there. We don't like town life very much. We're happier in the country. The children have more friends now than they had before because the people in the country are more friendly than the people in the town. Our life in the town wasn't as pleasant as it is now.

PART 2

Saturday traffic

Mr. Hunt This might be the house they live in.
Simon No, Dad, that isn't their house. There's the house they live in. Look! There's Mr. Blake.
Mr. Hunt Hello, Mike. How are you?
Mr. Blake Fine... and you?
Mr. Hunt Not too bad.

Simon Where's Ian?
Mr. Blake He was in the garage a minute ago but he might be in the house now. Would you like to go in?
Mrs. Hunt Where's Clare?
Mr. Blake She was here a minute ago. Here she is.
Mr. Hunt Hello, Clare.
Mrs. Blake Hello. Did you have a good journey?

Mr. Hunt Yes, we had a very good one.
Mrs. Blake What was the traffic like?

Mr. Hunt It wasn't too bad.
Mrs. Blake You were lucky. It's usually very bad at weekends.

Mrs. Blake Would you like to sit in the garden? There are more chairs in the garden than there are in the living-room.
Mr. Blake And it's not as hot outside as it is inside. Ian, you haven't got to stay here.

Would you like to go for a walk with Simon?
Ian Good idea. Would you like to go for a walk, Simon?
Simon Yes, I would.
Mrs. Blake Is anyone thirsty?
Mrs. Hunt Yes, I am. I'd love a cold drink..
Mr. Hunt I'm not. I had a drink at a cafe.

Mrs. Blake Did you have anything to eat?

Mr. Hunt No, we didn't have any food. We weren't hungry.

Mrs. Blake Are you hungry now?
Mr. Hunt I'm not but Simon might be. He was hungry an hour ago but he didn't have anything to eat. He only had a lemonade.
Mrs. Blake There are some biscuits in the kitchen. Would you like a few, Simon?
Simon Yes, please.

Ian Can I have a few, too, Mum?
Mrs. Blake You had some this morning. Are you still hungry?
Ian Yes, I'm always hungry.
Mrs. Blake All right, you can have two or threes.

Ian Have we got to eat them here, Mum?
Mrs. Blake No, you haven't got to eat them here. You can take them with you.
Ian Thanks, Mum.

A walk on the beach

Mr. Blake Would you like to go for a swim?
Mrs. Blake I can't go. I've got to make the lunch.
Mrs. Hunt Why don't you all go for a swim? I'm going to help Clare.
Mr. Blake You haven't got to help Clare. She's done most of the work.
Mrs. Hunt I'd like to stay here.
Mr. Blake Well... why don't we go, Guy? What time have we got to come back?
Mrs. Blake About one (1.00).

Mr. Hunt What a beautiful place you've got here, Mike.

Mr. Blake Thank you. We like it very much. It was terribly hot here last week. We had a picnic on the beach every evening. Yesterday the children had a party on the beach after dinner. They were in the water all the time.
Mr. Hunt Can they swim well?
Mr. Slake Yes, they can... very well. Would Simon and Jane like to spend next weekend here?

Mr. Hunt I'm sure they'd love to. Sarah and I've got to go to Cambridge next weekend.

The seasons

Mrs. Hunt How long have you lived here, Clare?
Mrs. Blake Since last June... about a year.

Mrs. Hunt Was it cold last winter?

Mrs. Bloke Yes it was but not as cold as Geneva. December and February were much colder than January.

Mrs. Hunt Did you have much snow?
Mrs. Blake Yes! Of course we didn't have as much snow as you had in Geneva.

Mrs. Hunt What about the other seasons?
Mrs. Blake I think autumn was the most beautiful season. The days were clear and dry and it was sunny and warm all the time. September and October were the nicest months but November was terrible. We had a lot of rain.

Mrs. Hunt What was last spring like?

Mrs. Blake It wasn't very nice. May was nicer than March and April. March was cold and April was wet.

Mrs. Hunt What's summer like? Is it always as hot as this?
Mrs. Blake It wasn't last year. But the summer's been marvellous this year.
Mrs. Hunt Is August as hot as July?
Mrs. Blake No.... It's usually cooler and drier.
Mrs. Hunt It sounds wonderful. Guy might take a job in London and we might buy a house here.
Mrs. Blake What a wonderful idea!
Mrs. Hunt Well... we might but we might not.

PART 3

The beach

Bob Would you like to go to the beach?

Judy No, thanks. It's too cold to go for a swim.
Bob But the water's warm in November.
Judy The water might be warm but the beach is cold.
Bob It was colder two months ago.
Judy I wasn't here two months ago, thank goodness.

Work

Jean Joe and Mary haven't got to work much now.

Jim Why not?

Jean They've got a lot of money. Joe's a writer and Mary's a teacher.

Jim Can Joe write well?

Jean Joe can but Mary can't.

Jim Does Mary teach well?

Jean Oh yes, very well. She's a very good teacher.
