The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles. The British Isles consist of two large islands – Great Britain and Ireland and 5.000 small islands. The UK is washed by the North Sea in the east, the Atlantic Ocean in the north and west and by the English Channel in the south. Great Britain consists of four parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Their capitals are London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast. The UK is one of the world’s smallest countries. Its area is 244,100 square kilometers. The population of G.B. is over 57 million people. English is the official language. There are many rivers and lakes in Britain. The chief rivers are the Severn (the longest) and the Thames (the most important). G.B. is a highly-developed industrial country. The main industries are textile, iron and steel, engineering, coal-mining, ship –building and others. The largest cities of G.B are London, Birmingham, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Bristol, Leeds and others.
