Великий художник умер 2 мая 1900 года в Феодосии, в возрасте восьмидесяти двух лет.

Перед самой смертью Айвазовский написал картину, которая называется «Морской залив», а в последний день жизни начал писать картину «Взрыв турецкого корабля», которая осталась незаконченной.

15 сентября 2007 года в Кронштадте был открыт первый в постреволюционной и постсоветсткой России памятник Айвазовскому. Бюст художника находится на Макаровской набережной у морской крепости, прикрывающей морские подходы к Санкт-Петербургу. Скульптор —заслуженный художник России, лауреат государственной премии Владимир Горевой. В торжественной церемонии открытия памятника приняли участие представители правительства Санкт-Петербурга, законодательного собрания северной столицы, администрации Кронштадта. Кроме этого, присутствовали представители Ленинградской военно-морской базы и праправнучка художника Ирина Касацкая.
