Определенный артикль
Определенный артикль (the) сопровождает те существительные, которые уже должны быть известны слушателю из контекста (The girl I told you about – девушка, о которой я тебе говорил), ситуации или из его общих знаний. Также он часто указывает на уникальные, единственные в своем роде предметы (The atom is the smallest unit of substance. - Атом – это мельчайшая единица вещества).
Также он может указывать на:
различные системы и составляющие инфраструктуры: When does the underground start to work? The phone is so expensive here.
· виды искусств: The theater was very popular two centuries ago.
· названия больших отрезков времени и эпох: mysteries of the past, wars of the Middle Ages
· некоторые названия мест: at the chemist's
Определенный артикль употребляется со следующими именами собственными:
Астрономические названия: the Sun, the North Star
Географические названия: the South Pole, The Hague, the Crimea
Горные цепи: the Alps, the Urals

Неопределенный артикль a/an
Неопределенный артикль (a/an) произошел от числительного one и используется, как правило, с существительными в единственном числе, обозначающими исчисляемые предметы.
Один из многих – There is a ball on the grass. На траве мяч. Говорящий указывает на этот предмет, то есть мяч.
К этому значению также относится использование неопределенного артикля в восклицательных предложениях со словом what: What a tall man! - Какой высокий человек!
Артикль в обобщающем значении означает, что существительное является представителем некоего класса: A kitten is a young cat. - Котенок – это молодая кошка.
В численном значении неопределенный артикль выражает свое исходное значение числа «один»: We could stay in Prague for only a day. - Мы могли оставаться в Праге только один день.

I was born in Yekaterinburg, it is my native city. Yekaterinburg is a modern city in Russia, and a large industrial and cultural centre of the Ural Federal District. Most of all I like to walk in Yekaterinburg`s parks. My favorite park is near the Ural Federal University. I study in the Ural Medical College. My dream is to become a doctor and work in one of Yekaterinburg`s out-patient clinics. I sometimes go to the Drama House with mum. My sister likes to watch concerts in “Cosmos” hall. My city is especially beautiful in summer. You can walk along the River Iset down at “Plotinka” and watch wonderful fountains. I was born in Yekaterinburg, it is my native city. Yekaterinburg is one of the largest cities of the Russian Federation. It is an administrative capital of the Sverdlovsk Region and the Ural Federal District. Nowadays the city is an important centre of industry, transport, finance, science and culture. The city was founded in 1723 and it is situated in the heart of the Eurasian continent, on the border of Europe and Asia and in the middle of the Ural Mountain Range.
Modern Yekaterinburg is one of the major industrial centres of Russia, especially for heavy engineering. The Uralmash plant produces heavy machinery and it is the city’s largest enterprise; it once employed some 50,000 workers, though now the number of the workers has dramatically decreased.
Yekaterinburg is an important railway junction, with railways radiating from it to all the parts of the Urals and the rest of Russia. The city is the leading cultural centre of the Urals and has numerous institutions of higher education, including the Ural A.M. Gorky State University (founded in 1920), a conservatory, and polytechnic, mining, forestry, agricultural, law, medical, and teacher-training institutes. The Urals branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and many scientific-research establishments are located there.
