4. If the author were a creative person he/she would describe Belarus indifferent ways. If he/she could draw he/she would start drawing pictures with its beautiful  landscapes; if he/she could write he/she would write lyric poems about it.

II. Listen to the story about a girl and answer the questions below.

1.   - Whitney was a bit shy and she was nervous because she was going to share a room with a complete stranger and live far from her parents. And she has no idea how she was going to make friends.

 2.  - In her first English class she was asked to tell something about herself. And she said that her goal for that class was to make just one good friend. And one of the students came to Whitney and introduced himself and asked if she would be his friend.

3. - Whitney learned the power of asking of what she wanted, being honest and taking action.

III. Let’s talk about accommodation.

We have a nice flat in a new block of flats. Our flat is on the fourth floor. It has all modern conveniences: central heating, gas, electricity, cold and hot running water, a lift and a chute to carry rubbish down. There are three rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a hall in our flat. The living-room is the largest and most comfortable room in the flat.

The bedroom is smaller than the living-room and not so light as there is only one window in it. In this room there are two beds with a bedside-table between them. It’s really wonderful to have a room for yourself. My room is not large but very cosy. There isn’t much furniture in it, only the most necessary. In my opinion, the study is the best room in our flat. But the warmest place in our flat is the kitchen, I think — the place where the whole family gathers every evening not only to have supper together, but also to speak and rest. I like the English proverb: “My home is my castle” because my flat is, indeed, my castle.

II. Listen to the career counsellor speaking about choosing a career and answer the questions below.

1. - Choosing the profession influences all our life. It is like choosing a wife or a    husband, or choosing friends to rely on.

2. - Young people usually try to get jobs that are paid well. These are jobs connected with business, information technology,  politics and so on.

  3. - While choosing a job you should take into consideration such things as talent and personal interest. You should have the ability to the profession you have chosen and your job should bring you joy and satisfaction.

III. Let’s talk about the education.

Knowledge is power – the famous saying suggests. Every person with knowledge can make a better way in the world. In Belarus there are 4 stages of education: preschool edu cation, primary school education, secondary school education and higher education. In our country primary and secondary school education is compulsory. Children start attending primary school at the age of 6-7. The school year begins on September 1st and ends at the end of May. It is divided into 4 terms, called quarters. At the end of each term we have holidays. The school day stars at 8 a.m. and lasts till 3 o`clock p.m. So we have 6 or 7 lessons a day. We study many different subjects: Russian, English, Belarusian, Mathematics, Geography, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, History. After the 9th form  children can enter a college or a lyceum. They give young people a secondary education. After finishing school pupils can enter a university to get a higher education. There are more than 50 higher education establishments in Belarus. In conclusion, I`d like to say that education is no doubt very important to everyone. Nowadays it is quite necessary to be highly skilled and qualified specialist.

 3. - The receptionist said that she would send an engineer if there were any that day to fix the problem.

III. Let’s talk about the environment.

I’d say that “our planet is in danger” is not the opinion, it’s a fact. Among the most  urgent problems are the ozone layer, acid rains, global warming, toxic pollution of atmosphere, disappearance of forests, contamination of underground waters by chemical elements, destruction of soil in some areas, threat to some flora and fauna representatives and many others. There are a lot of places on our planet that need immediate help. Our country is not an exception. The nuclear accident at Chernobyl, which took place on April 26, 1986., has seriously aggravated the ecological situation in Belarus. That catastrophe can be considered as the largest disaster of the 20th century. As the result of that accident 18% of territories of our republic were contaminated by radioactive elements. The agriculture of our country suffered great losses. More than 20% of the population has also suffered. A death rate among children has increased considerably. The wide are carried out, but health state of the people living in polluted areas, is worsened. The level of thyroid gland cancer has increased, the immunity of children and women is weakened, many diseases appear out only a few years later. Everyone understands that this catastrophe is a threat to health of our nation, and though years have already passed, the results will be shown on the futures.
