The military map uses a method which shows the form of the ground by means of lines. These lines are called counter lines.

A counter line is an imaginary line on the surface of the earth, all points of which are at the same elevation. The vertical distance between successive counter lines on a map is the same and is called counter interval. The declivity of a slope, or its gradient, may be determined by measuring the distance between two points and noting their difference in elevation. On all maps height of the ground at any point is figured from sea level.

A scale on a map represents the relation of map distance to ground distance. Scales are of two types: representative fraction and graphic scale.

The most common military maps are drawn so that all ground distances are 25,000 or 50,000 times larger than the distance on the map.

There are three methods of classifying military maps - by type (topographic, planimetric, photomaps), by scale (small-scale, medium-scales, large-scale maps) and by military use (general, strategic, strategic-tactical, tactical maps.)

Map symbols fall into several categories. One refers to the features normally existing on the area that is mapped. Another is the graphical representation of military units. A third category of symbols is that concerned with the graphic description of roads and bridges.

RELIEF

The word relief is used to describe the rise and fall ofground forms with the help of contours, harchures or layer tints. Counter lines are thin lines drawn on the map, each line joining up points of equal height above sea level. The rise between successive counter lines is known as vertical interval. The distance measured flat on the map between adjacent counter lines is known as horisontal equivalent. The size ofthis depends upon whether the counter lines are close together or wide apart; that is, whether the slope is steep or gradual, convex or concave. The form, of counters shows a ridge and a crest, a peak and aspur, a saddle and a draw, as well as other topographic features such as apass, aravine, a hollow, abluff or mesa.

Hachures are short, black tadpole-shaped strokes, the thicker end of which being inthe direction of the higher ground. They are drawn heavier in the direction ofthe higher ground.

Layer tints are a method by which heights are shown in different coloured tints. Land up to 200 feet is generally coloured green or white, asit raises it becomes light brown, and the higher the land the deeper becomes the shade of brown.

MARGINAL INFORMATION

The outer edges of a map contain information which is used to iterpret the map. Allmaps are not the same so it is necessary, every time a different map is used, to examine carefully the marginal information.

1. Sheet name. Generally а mар is named after an outstanding cultural or geographic feature. Whenever possible the name of the largest city on the map is used.

2. Sheet number. The sheet number is found in the upper right margin assigned to each map sheet.

3. Series name and scale. A map series usually comprises a group of similar maps of the same scale and on the same sheet lines of format, designed to cover a particular geographic area. It may also be a group of maps to serve а common purpose. The name given a series is that of the most prominent area. The map scale is found both in the upper left margin and the center of the lower margin.

4. Series number. Many times there are more than one series of maps covering the same area. For this reason, each series is given an identifying number, usually consisting of four letters and figures.

TOPOGRAPHIC MAP SYMBOLS AND COLORS

The purpose of a topographical map is to visualize an area of the earth’s surface with pertinent features properly positioned. Ideally, all the features within the area would appear on the map in their true position and shape. This, however, is not practicable because many of the features would be unimportant and others would be unrecognizable because of their reduction in size. The map maker has been forced to use conventional signs to represent the natural and man-made features of the earth’s surface. These symbols resemble, as closely as possible, the actual features themselves but as thought viewed from above.

To make the identification of features on the map easier by providing a more natural appearance and a contrast, the topographic symbols are usually printed in different colours, with each color identifying a class of features. The colours used and what represent are:

Black – the majority of cultural or man-made features.

Blue – water features such as lakes, rivers, swamps.

Green – vegetation such as wood, orchards, and vineyards.

Brown – all relief features such as contours.

Red – main roads, built-up areas, and special features.

Occasionally other colours may be used to show special information.

These, as a rule, will be indicated in the marginal information.

GRIDS AND COORDINATES

Geographic coordinates are a system of lines on the surface of the earth, utilized as reference system, expressed in degrees, minutes and seconds. To understand these coordinates you must become familiar with a system of reference lines known as latitude and longtude.

The determination of distance, azimuths and location is a complicated procedure when working with degrees, minutes and seconds. Because of this, another quicker and easier system had to be devised for military purposes. The system is known as a military grid. A military grid is a net work of squares made up of north-south lines showing distance east of an arbitrary origin, and east-west lines showing distances north of the same reference point. The distance between grid lines is called the grid interval, which may be 1000, 5000, or 10000 yards or meters depending on the scale of the map. Thus to determine the grid square in which the object is located one should locate first vertical grid line reading right, then horizontal grid line reading up. The rule is called «READ-RIGHT-UP» rule.

TYPES OF AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS

An aerial photo is a perspective picture of the earth's topographic and planimetric features, with either vertical or oblique viewpoint taken from aircraft.

There are three general types of aerial photos: verticals, obliques and
composites.

A vertical photo is taken with the axis of the camera perpendicular to the datum plane of the earth. The scale of verticals is fairly constant, and terrain and topographic features are shown with little apparent displacement or distortion.

The vertical aerial photo is a valuable instrument for conveying topographic and planimetric information because: it possesses in pictorial effect a wealth of detail which no map can equal. It possesses accuracy of form. An aerial photo may be prepared in a short time. With freedom of flight, it may be made of an area otherwise inaccessible,

Oblique photos are taken with.the camera deliberately tilted. An oblique photo that includes the horizon is known as a high oblique, one that doesn't include the horizon is called a low oblique. The scale of an oblique isn’t constant and the photos cannot be scaled as in case of verticals.

A composite photo is made by joining several photos taken at a single camera.

Learning to read a vertical photo is similar to learning map reading. It consistsof being able to recognize familiar objects on the landscape from their appearence on the photo, to orient the photo, to determine its scale, and to measure distances and directions. A photo, however, is not as easy to read as a map. There are five important clues which will aid you in recognition and identification of features on the aerial photograph. They are relative size, shape, shadow, relative tone, and relationship to surrounding objects.

Knowing the relative sizeof an object is a valuable aid in reading a photo. If one object in a photo can be identified as having some definite dimensions(roads, railroads, barracs, football fields), the size of other objects can be determined by comparing them with that object.

The shape of an object as shown on a photo is а plan view. Man-made objects have regular shapes, straight lines and smooth curves. The shape of natural features is irregular. (Orchards have very regular patterns while woods are very irregular.)

Shadow is the most important consideration in interpreting aerial photos. You can more often identify the shape of an object by its shadow than, by its image or its tone. This is because the vertical dimensions shown by the shadow are often more characteristic than the horizontal dimensions shown by the image.

The direction between ground features is measured from a common base line or lines of zero direction. Directions are expressed as angles, measured clockwise from north. These angles are called azimuths.

Out of the three north directions, true north is the direction to the North Pole. On the map, true north is represented by the meridians, or lines of longitude.

Magnetic north is established by the compass. The true North Pole and the magnetic North are two separate points on the earth's surface.

Grid north is the direction represented by the north-south grid lines on a map.

Except for true north, base directions, as defined above, are not constant for all sections of the earth's surface; not are they constant on the map representing portions of that surface. They both change from year to year. The angular differences of magnetic north and grid north from true north are known respectively as magnetic declination and grid declination. Their values are printed on the face of maps, usally in the marginal information.

This is because the vertical dimensions shown by the shadow are often more characteristic than the horizontal dimensions show by the image.
