Safety

Accidents seem as old аз automobile vehicles themselves. Joseph Cugnot crashed his steam-powered "Fardier" against a wall in 1770. The first recorded automobile fatality was BridgetDriscoll in Augusts 17, 1896 in London, England and the first in the United States was Henry Bliss on September 13, 1899 in New York.

Every year more than a million people are killed and about 50 million people are wounded in traffic (according to WHO estimates), either by crashing into something, or by being crashed into. Major factors in accidents include driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, inattentive driving, overtired driving, road hazards such as snow, potholes and animals, and reckless driving. Special safety features have been built into cars for years, some for safety of car's occupants only, and some for the safety of the others.

The Four-Stroke Cycle

In most engines a single cycle of operation (intake, compression, power andexhaust ) takes place over four strokes of a piston, made in two engine revolutions. When an engine has more than oily cylinder the cycles are evenly staggered forsmooth operation, but each, cylinder will go through a full cycle in any two-engine revolutions. When the pistonis a top of the cylinder at the beginningof the intake strokethe intake valve opens and the descending piston draws in the air-fuel mixture.

At the bottom of the stroke the intake valve closes and the piston starts upward on the compression stroke, during which it squeezes the air-fuel mixture into a small space at the top of the cylinder. The ratio of the volume of the cylinder when the piston is at the top is called the compression ratio. The higher the compression ratio, the more powerful the engine and the higher its efficiency. However, in order to accommodateair pollution control devices, manufacturers have had to lower compression ratios.

Birth of Cars

The birth of the car occurred over a period of years. In 1885 the first real car rolled down on to the streets. The earlier were stream powered road vehicles.

The first self-propelled car was built by Nicolas Cugnot in 1769 which could attain speeds upto 6 kms/hour. In 1771 he designed another stream-driven engine which ran so fast that it rammed into a wall, recording the world's first accident.

In 1807 Francois Isaac de Rivaz designed the first internal combustion engine that used a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen to generate energy. In I860 Jean Joseph Etienne Lenoir built the first successful two-stroke gas driven engine. In 1862 he built an experimental vehicle driven by his gas-engine, which ran at a speed of 3 kms/hour. These cars became popular and by 1865 could be frequently seen on the roads.

What makes it a "Hybrid?"

Any vehicle is a hybrid when combines two or more sources of power. In

fact, many people have probably owned a hybrid vehicle at some point. For

example, a moped (a motorized pedal bike) is a type of hybrid because it

combines the power of a gasoline engine with the pedal power of its rider.

Hybrid vehicles are all around us. Most of the locomotives we see pulling

trainsare diesel-electric hybrids. Cities like Seattle have diesel-electric buses —

these can draw electric power from overhead wires or run on diesel when they are

away fromthe wires. Giant mining tracks are often diesel-electric hybrids.

Submarines are also hybrid vehicles — some are nuclear-electric and some are

diesel-electric. Any vehicle that combines two or more sources of power that can

directly or indirectly provide propulsion power is a hybrid.

The gasoline-electric hybrid car is just that — a cross between a gasoline-

powered car and an electric car.
