Most teachers give written or oral tests to help evaluate the progress of their students. By analyzing the test results of all the stu­dents in a group, teachers can discover which students need special help and decide what kind of help they need. By evaluating the performance of the entire group teachers can judge the effectiveness of their teaching methods and materials.

Most schools group students in various grades ac­cording to age. In these schools, teachers use test re­sults to give students specific marks in their courses. Nongraded schools do not group students according to age. Instead, students advance in each subject at their own speed. They attend classes with other students who have reached the same level, regardless of age. In most of these schools, teachers give general evaluations rather than specific marks. The evaluations may be writ­ten, or a teacher may meet with each student and his or her parents to discuss the student's progress.
