Major bank raises rates

A major bank has raised its interest rates. The First National bank announced today that it will pay a quarter of a percent more interest to its depositors. At the same time, the bank is raising the rate it charges on loans. The rate on mortgages will move up a half point to nine percent. Car loans will increase by three quarters of a point to 11 percent.

Short-term consumer loans will edge up to 12.5 percent, an icrease of half a point. A bank spokesman said that demand for loans has picked up in recent weeks. Meanwhile, he said, depositors have sought out higher rates.
