Introduction

What is a “stereotype”? Stereotype is a stable, standard idea about something or somebody, but most often it is not right.[1]

In someone’s opinion it is a dangerous thing to judge about people by stereotypes, but nevertheless a certain stereotype does exist. Almost every nation has a reputation of some kind. For example, it has been generally recognized that the Russian people are generous, open-hearted, kind; the Spaniards are said to be noble and very proud; the French are supposed to be amorous, gay and light-minded. We say that the Germans are very efficient but rather dull; the Americans — boastful, energetic, technical-minded and easy-going.[2]

The English is a very unusual nation, as they live on the island and have their own unique national consciousness. That is why there are so many stereotypes about English. But I think these mythic pictures are sometimes far from being true, especially in today's world.

So, the subject of our research is culture of Britain and English national character, and the object o f the work is stereotypes of the English people.

The purpose of our research work is the examination of these stereotypes/myths and making the conclusion whether they are true or false.

To reach this aim of the work the following tasks are to be solved:

1. To define ‘a stereotype’ and the way the myths are created and changed

2. To find and study information about English national character

3. To learn the facts about Englishmen and to analyze them

4. To summarize the topic material by comparing the myths and the reality

5. To create a questionnaire for conducting a survey among the students of our gymnasium, to analyze the result and make the conclusions.

When I was preparing our research work, I used some books. One of them is “How to be an alien” (George Mikes, the British author). Firstly, this book gives information about real character of English nation with jest. Then there are some differences of continental people and the Englishmen. Moreover, we can read about some habits and British whims. Also I used some newspapers, articles and reports about British people.

Information about English national character was founded in the Internet sites too. So, the Internet gave as much good and useful information, as I needed for my research work.

This work was carried out using the following methods of research work:

1. Studying main stereotypes and myths about the Englishmen in our life.

2. Studying literature about the English national character.

3. Studying topical material from the Internet.

4. Comparing the stereotypes about English and real facts.

5. Drawing the conclusion.

It can be stated that this work has some theoretical value as it outlines the peculiarities of English national character. It also carries out some practical, cultural, linguistic, informative and educative significance.
