A. I suppose you’ve received our annotation for some machinery for an automobile plant, haven’t you?

B. Yes, we have. We are now comparing your price and terms with offers received from other manufacturers but I must tell you at once Mr. A., that we can’t agree for some items in your offer.

A. Which terms do you mean?

B. First of all, we can’t agree to a sliding price scale.

A. I assure you, Mr. A., that very many British firms insist on sliding price scales, when the time of delivery is longer than 12 months.

B. But you know, of course, that most continental firms are now quoting fixed prices. We can’t agree to pay 30 per cent of the price in advance either. We are prepared to pay 10 per cent of the amount of the order in advance, 85 per cent of each part of delivery within 90 days after the dispatch to us of the shipping documents and the remaining 5 per cent after the expiration of the guarantee period.

A. The question you are rising are very important and I can’t decide anything myself. I’m going to cable my board of Directors and I’ll let you know their answer.

Dialogue II

Mr. Menon is a representative of an Indian industrial firm. He is visiting the plant director of which is Mr. Muratov. They are discussing the problem of sale of Kazakh equipment to India.

Mr. Menon: I like your plant, Mr. Muratov, very much. It’s really good and modern.

Mr. Muratov: Glad to hear that. The plant is really good. We built it only two years ago.

Mr. Menon: I wonder how long it took you to construct it.

Mr. Muratov: Four years, though it’s one of the biggest plants here.

Mr. Menon: You produce very good equipment, especially I like your compressors, they are easy to operate and reliable.

Mr. Muratov: That’s right. Our compressors are in great demand in the world market. We export them to a number of countries of the world.

Mr. Menon: We know that the quality of your equipment is very high and we are going to conclude a contract and to place a big order with you.
