It’s official – wearing casual clothes to work makes people rude, lazy and flirtatious. Dress-down Friday has not worked out. A host of new surveys from the States shows employers increasingly concerned that staff who turn up ‘smart casual’ are up to 50 per cent more likely to act rude and silly. Lateness, sluggishness or just not being there at all have all become hallmarks of the last day of the working week, according to a study for American Corporate Trends Magazine. So much so, that many bosses are now returning Friday to its previous strict and sober incarnation.

Friday first went casual in Britain in the late 1980s, but the practice didn’t really catch on until the mid-Nineties. By then, the economy was booming and new sources of income and prestige – IT, biotechnology, dotcom – were emerging. The people who worked for these firms may have been rich, but bowler hats and umbrellas represented an older – now ailing – economy, one that had been founded in the mid-nineteenth century on a formal distinction between work and home. The New Economy, by contrast, liked to emphasize the continuity and even overlap between professional and domestic spaces.

How the West Was Won

Throughout the nineteenth century, continuing expansion kept pushing Americans farther and farther toward the Pacific Ocean. The frontier itself was defined by the U.S. Census Bureau as the farthest western area inhabited by two to six people per square mile. It would continue to shift until 1890, when it officially disappeared with a census count showing a denser population than that all the way to the Pacific.

Were the dreams that impelled men and women to hazard great dangers and hardships to seek a new home in the Far West during the nineteenth century?

That interest took off in the wake of the 1820 land law that not only brought down the price of Western land but halved the minimum parcel size to 80 acres, which meant that a family seeking to settle could buy a plot for as little as $100.

More laws reduced the prices even further, eventually to just ever twelve cents an acre.

Trappers and traders pushed into new territories and returned telling stories of fortunes to be made in gold, furs, land and other natural resources.

Я думаю, что нет, не синонимы. И вот какие у меня аргументы. Многим кажется, что лентяи постоянно находятся в полном покое: им нет ни до чего дела, они могут отложить любое дело до лучших времен. Но это не так. В покое можно находиться не только тогда, когда ничего не делаешь. Лень — это состояние тела, а покой — это состояние души. Ленивый человек пытается оградить себя от жизни. Внутренне спокойный человек пытается узнать жизнь и, поняв что-то очень важное для себя, успокаивается. Можно быть физически активным, а духовно находиться в покое. Ведь это значительно важнее, чем физический покой, который обеспечивает себе лентяй.
Поэтому по-настоящему находиться в покое может не лентяй, а человек, живущий полной и интересной жизнью.
