Popular culture glorified the doctrine of Manifest Destiny and painted pictures of a frontier experience that was larger than life, from J.F. Cooper’s storied to wild West shows and idyllic prints with scenic wonders and “noble savages” “Make way, I say, for the young American Buffalo”, bellowed a Democratic orator in 1844, “ – he has not yet got land enough/// I tell you we will give him Oregon for his summer shade, and the region of Texas as his summer pasture(applause). Like allof his race, he wants salt, too. Well, he shall have the use of two oceans – the mighty Pacific and the turbulent Atlantic… He shall not stop his career until he slakes his thirst in the frozen ocean. (Cheers)”

Of course, neither the “frontier” nor the overall West had ever been unoccupied, as Native Americans and been established there for generations. The nomadic early pioneer generally carved their farms from the wilderness, rarely bothering about titles to the land. If the lawful owners appeared, the squatters would just move farther west and start over again.

These brave souls – fired by the new American dream of an unspoiled place to call home – favored log cabins because they were easy to build and because they required very few nails, which were expensive. If forced to move on, families would burn down their cabins to recover the nails from the ashes.

Любителям книг действительно очень повезло. Они даже не представляют насколько, потому что, читая книги, человек воспитывает сам себя. Кроме того, такой человек очень богат. Не в том смысле, что он разъезжает на шикарных машинах и имеет шикарные дома, а в том смысле, что он богат умом. А ум — это сокровище, которое скрыто в каждом человеке. Но чтобы его открыть, нужно много читать.

The University of Winnemac is at Mohalis fifteen miles from Zenith. There are twelve thousand students; beside this prodigy Oxford is a tiny theological school and Harvard a select college for young gentlemen. The University has a baseball field under glass; its buildings are measured by the mile; it hires hundreds of young Doctors of Philosophy to give rapid instruction in Sanscrit, navigation, accountancy, spectacle – fitting, sanitary engineering, Provencal poetry, tariff schedules, rutabaga – growing, motor car designing, the history of Voronezh, the style of Matthew Arnold, the diagnosis of myohypertaphia kymoparalytica, and department – store advertising. Its president is the best money – raiser and the best after – dinner speaker in the United States; and Winnemac was the first school in the world to conduct its extension courses by radio.

In 1904, when Martin Arrowsmith was an Art and Science Junior preparing for medical school, Winnemac had but five thousand students.

Martin was twenty one. He seemed pale, in contrast to his black smooth hair, but he was a respectable runner, a fair basketball center, and a savage hockey – player. The coeds murmured that he “looked so romantic”, but they merely talked about him at a distance, and did not know that he could have been a hero of amours. For all his stubbornness he was shy.

The University had become his world. His idol was Professor Edward, head of the department of chemistry, who was universally knows as “Encore”. Edward’s knowledge of the history of chemistry was immense. He could read Arabic, and he influenced has fellow chemists by asserting that the Arabs had anticipated all their researches. Himself, Professor Edwards never did researches. He sat before fires and stroked his collie and chuckled in his beard.

In college Martin had not belonged to a Greek Letter secret society. He had been “rushed”, but he had resented the condescension of the aristocracy of men from the largest cities. Now that most of his classmates had departed to insurance offices, law school, and banks he was lonely, and tempted by an invitation from Digamma Pi, the chief medical fraternity.

Digamma Pi was a lively boarding – house with a billiard table and low prices. Rough and amiable noises came from it at night, and a good deal of singing about When I Die Don’t Bury Me at All; yet for three years Digamma had won the valedictory and the Hugh Loizeau Medal in Experimental Surgery.

Музыка открывает человеку дверь в другой мир. В этом мире можно обойтись без слов — здесь царят звуки. Музыка успокаивает или возбуждает, веселит или заставляет грустить. Она владеет душой человека, если тот способен ее слушать. А «глухих» к музыке людей фактически нет.
Музыка заставляет замирать зал, внимающий нежным звукам скрипки или мощным звукам целого оркестра. Она звучит внутри нас, и мы поем «домашними» голосами, а то и вовсе без них, потому что желаем выразить свои чувства таким образом. Мы слышим музыку в журчании ручья и в шепоте листвы, в завывании ветра и стуке капели.
Чем же объясняется ее необыкновенная власть над человеком? Может быть, она и есть тот самый универсальный язык, с помощью которого могут без переводчика общаться люди разных национальностей? Ученые установили, что музыкой можно лечить, с ее помощью можно улучшить усвоение новой информации, но все-таки главное ее предназначение — касаться глубоких струн человеческой души и звучать в гармонии с окружающим миром.
