Неопределённый артикль а / an используется только перед исчисляемыми существительными в единственном числе.
Существительное упоминается впервые. Типичные грамматические конструкции: there is, have got, this is | I have got a car. This is a bag. There is a cat under the table. |
При обозначении профессии или при описании характерных свойств | My friend is a musician. He is a kind person. |
При обобщении в значении любой, каждый, всякий | A pet needs love and care. |
В значении один | I'll be back in an hour. She works six hours a day. |
В восклицательных предложениях после what — какой | What a nice idea! |
После слов such — такой, quite — вполне | Bob is such / quite / a talented teacher. |
Речь идет о болезнях: a cold — простуде, a headache — головной боли, a sore throat — больном горле | I have got a strong headache. |
Определённый артикль the может употребляться перед любым нарицательным существительным, если перед этим существительным можно сказать английское слово this / that /those /these, а также если существительное:
