Перифраз (periphrasis)

Перифраз – троп, состоящий в замене названия предмета описательным оборотом с указанием его существенных, характерных признаков. Это синоним.оборот, к-й не может сост.из 1 слова: Шекспир – the Swan of Avon. Служит для выразительности, т.к. осн.на метафоре: battle-play of swords либо на метонимии: judge-the gentleman in the long robe. Кроме того, его стилист.функции:

1) образная хар-ка в метаречи: ревность-green eyed monster. The beast that bears me. (horse) (W.Shakespeare

2) пафос речи, приподнятость: king-the protector of earls, the victory lord, I took my obedient feet away from him. (W.S.Gilbert)

3) создание комич.эффекта: ножницы-the fatal engine

Перифраз бывает:

1) языковой: прекрасный пол, my better half-супруг, the ship of the desert-верблюд

2) речевой: пианист-disturber of the piano-keys. The hospital was crowded with the surgically interesting products of the fighting in Africa. \[=wounded\] (I.Shaw)

3) логический: mother-what can never be replaced, The lamp-lighter made his nightly failure in attempting to brighten up the street with gas. [= lit the street lamps] (Ch.Dickens)

The most essential feature is substituted for its name:

e.g. The Dark Continent (Africa).

traditional language periphrasis:

e.g. an affair of honour (duel), gentlemen of the long robe (lawyers).

sake of humor, satire, parody:

e.g. a strange specimen of human race (a cabman).

for bombastic effect, when something is elevated, hallowed:

e.g. "That punctual servant of all work-the Sun" (Ch. Dickens).
