AIRLINE TICKETS

Airline tickets are documents used to gain access to an airplane as a passenger. Without purchasing an airline ticket, you won’t be able to board your flight. These tickets are usually bought and issued from the airline carrier or a third-party agency. Airline tickets include identification information such as your name, address and phone number, along with the date and time of departure, flight number and airline.

The history of airline tickets coincides with the history of the airline industry. Airline tickets were introduced when the very first passenger flights were available. The first airline offering flights was DELAG airline in Germany in 1910. The first United States commercial flights were available about five years later. The airlines issued airline tickets, which were usually typed with a typewriter. However, sometimes airline tickets at the time were actually handwritten.

The basic function of an airline ticket is to verify that the passenger has the authority to board the flight and has paid his fare. Before the Internet was widely used, passengers would need to call the airline or a travel agency to purchase tickets. After booking and paying for their trips, a ticket would be mailed to the passengers. However, with advancements in recent years, most airlines, travel agencies and travel companies, such as Orbitz, Travelocity and Kayak, can issue electronic tickets. This means you choose and pay for your flight online, then a confirmation receipt is sent to your email address or available on the website. You can print this as an e-ticket and bring it to the airport. If you forget your e-ticket, the airline can normally look up your reservation on the computer by your name and/or confirmation number.

Several types of airline tickets are used today. One distinction is the class of your seat in the flight. Typically, flights can consist of up to four different types of classes: first class, business class, premium economy and economy. The different types of classes offer varying degrees of luxuries such as legroom and on-flight service. Additionally, tickets can be classified by whether or not the ticket is refundable. It’s suggested by most airlines that you purchase airline tickets 21 days in advance to get the best rates.

Nearly 800 million Americans boarded flights in 2007. That number indicates an increase of approximately 50 million from 2006 and 150 million from 2000. The number of Americans boarding flights is expected to reach one billion by 2017.

ARRIVAL IN CAPE TOWN

Airport

Cape Town International Airport (flight information, tel: 934 0407) is on the Cape Flats, 22 km and half an hour's drive (longer during rush hour) from the city centre.

Intercape operates two shuttle buses from the airport: there’s a scheduled service to the main train terminus, running on the half hour and costing R30. From their office in the international terminal they operate a door-to-door transfer service which goes to anywhere on the Peninsula.

A cheaper door-to-door option is the 24-hour Backpackers Airport Shuttle, a minibus that takes passengers from the airport to anywhere in the city centre. The service operates in response to demand, which means you'll either need to pre-book or wait up to 45 minutes for them to get to the airport.

If you want to travel by car, there are taxi ranks outside the terminals (about R100 to the city centre). Please note that taxis must display the driver's name and a clearly visible meter. Inside the terminals you'll find the desks of the major car rental firms. There are no trains from the airport.

Intercity buses and trains

Greyhound, Intercape, and Translux intercity buses and mainline trains from other provinces, all terminate in the centre of town around the interlinked central complex that includes the railway station and the Golden Acre shopping mall. Everything you need for your next move is within two or three blocks of here.

Information

The best place for information is the Cape Town Tourist Information Office, on the corner of Burg and Castle Sts.
