Agricultural economics has been one of the leading branches of applied economics since 1920s. Agricultural economics began as a branch of economics that specifically dealt with land usage; it focused on maximizing the crop yield while maintaining a good soil ecosystem. Throughout the 20th century the discipline expanded and the current scope of the discipline is much broader. Agricultural economics today includes a variety of applied areas, having considerable overlap with conventional economics. Agricultural economists have made substantial contributions to research in economics, econometrics, development economics, and environmental economics. Now it is developing rapidly and successfully as it is important for most countries of the world.

To understand agricultural economics it is necessary to know how crops are sown, cultivated, fertilized and harvested, how livestock are bred, raised, fattened and sold.

One of the main characteristics of agricultural sector is its great dependence on natural conditions, such as climate, weather, soil, etc. For example, there are differences between farms growing crops or fattening cattle in the central part of Russia and in its southern regions as well as between farms growing wheat in the Ukraine and Kazakhstan. Farms of the same type working under different natural conditions use different livestock breeds, crop varieties, harvesting machinery, etc.

In developed countries the productivity in agricultural sector including agriculture and processing of agricultural products is being raised as fast as in economy as a whole. The main reasons for rising efficiency are: a) better agricultural technologies; b) better capital inputs, such as machinery; c) achievements in biological sciences.

However there are two main factors limiting further rise in efficiency: increasing energy scarcity as well as the loss of topsoil and water.

Agricultural economics influences food policy, agricultural policy, and environmental policy.

Ideas for Cheap Ways to Attract Retail Customers to a Store

by Chris Miksen, Demand Media

Attracting customers to your retail store doesn’t have to drain you of your cash. Sometimes cheap promotions work just as well as expensive promotions. From pulling new customers in by offering discounts on certain items to giving people free snacks and drinks, numerous marketing ideas exist.

Coupons are relatively cheap to make, especially when compared to other forms of marketing and advertising, such as TV ads. They’re also usually effective, which is why so many major chains use them. Even if people have never heard about your business, coupons will attract them to your store because they’re given a chance to save money, and every consumer wants to save money. To add a little creativity to an otherwise true and tried promotional tool, offer scratch-off coupons. Customers can scratch off the little box on the coupon to find out what the coupon is good for.

Samples allow you to show customers why they should buy your product by giving them a small testwith the product. To attract customers to your store so that they can try your samples, post signs on your store windows promoting the free samples, or add a starburst sticker to your existing advertising materials to feature the samples.

Promotional Events

Promotional events serve as an excellent way of attracting new customers to your store, as evidenced by the numerous businesses that hold such events during their grand openings. You don’t need an extravagant event to pull in new customers; something small will do just fine. An open house event is appropriate any time, or you can create your own "occasion." For example, a jewelry store could set up a few tables inside the store and offer customers coffee, cookies, and other small snacks, with a name for the event to promote one of the items, such as “The Leo Diamond event of the year.”

Сheap advertising exists too. Examples include walking around neighborhoods and placing magnets on people’s door, placing door hangers on door knobs, and printing a few t-shirts with your business name on the front for you and your family to wear. Entrepreneur suggests placing flyers under the wipers on people’s cars.

With social networking taking over the Internet, you have the opportunity to connect with thousands of people instantly. Create profileson multiple social networking sites and talk to people daily. Talk about sales that your store is having or new products that just came in.
