Популярная лексика. Проблема перевода

Поскольку популярная лексика постоянно встречается в речи, в газетах, журналах, по радио и телевидению, то совершенно ясно, что ее надо отрабатывать и ее знание должно быть доведе­но до автоматизма. Так, в нашем недавно изданном словаре "En­glish-Russian Learner's Dictionary of Popular Words and Phrases"' дается около 5000 гнезд, в которых представлена популярная лек­сика. В основном — это лексика прессы, радио и телевидения.

Приведем один пример, чтобы показать, в чем состоит попу­лярность подобной лексики.

Возьмем слово-штамп goodwill. В каких только ситуациях оно не встречается. Это и словосочетаемость: to enjoy/have/create a goodwill; to win a goodwill; to depend/rely on the goodwill of; to show/express goodwill. Это и отдельные устойчивые выражения с этим словом: а gesture of goodwill; to act in the spirit of goodwill; a goodwill ambassador.

Другими словами, это популярное слово встречается в речи очень часто. И таких популярных слов в английском языке не­сколько тысяч.

Некоторые из них стали популярными недавно (to escalate, to teach-in), некоторые популярны уже десятки лет (to drive in, fair hearing, to get to the heart of the matter, to speak from the heart, global survival, give smb the go-ahead, golden handshake, pressure group и т. д.).

Поскольку эти единицы популярны, ими надо владеть на уровне автоматизма, т. е. должно быть свободное владение попу­лярной лексикой.

Упражнение 1. Переведите предложения, содержащие популярную лексику.

1. We seem to be in a crunch of one kind or another all the time.

2. I don't think he'll win; it's a one-man crusade.

3. Look at her dress! It's a last cry!

4. The papers actual cry out against injustice.

5. It's not my cup of tea.

6. Why do you read this paper? — Because it covers current events very well.

7. Where is the arrested person? - He is in custody.

8. Is this article expensive? — No, it isn't. It's a cut-price article.

9. Cut the comedy! We don't have time!

10. What about his position? — Well, he's dead broke.

11. The whole plan was a dead duck from the beginning.

12. This exercise is quite easy! I'd say it's dead easy!

13. She acts like she is dead from the neck up. (Br.E.)

14. Why do you ask this question a number of times? Don't you know it's a dead horse (= dead issue).

15. What kind of policy is this? — It's a dear money policy.

16. I don't like heated debates.

17. It'll take years to solve the issue. It's a deep-seated political crisis.

18. He got an outright denial.

19. Who is going to listen to your sweeping denunciations?

20. He had an interesting job and it shaped his destiny.

21. In political circles he was known as a diehard because he refused to abandon his conservative position.

22. Dig up, man. This is important!

23. He is an advocate of a person-to-person diplomacy.

24. Why do you go to and fro? Is it your shuttle diplomacy?

25. I enjoy listening to the speeches of bleeding hearts.

26. Drug trafficking is prohibited by law.

27. He likes winter. He takes to winter like a duck to water.

28. In this case we should speak about the due process of law.

29. Is he a duly authorized person?

30. Considerable assets were earmarked for privatization.
