The Beginning of the Past

Ogami Banri: If I remember correctly, it was just a little before summer break…….

Ogami’s Friend: Hey Ogami, long time no see. Haven’t seen you since middle school. These guys are my buddies from light music club. Lemme introduce ‘em to you.
Ogami Banri: Who is he?
Ogami’s Friend: Ah, he’s not part of the light music club, but I convinced him to come. Isn’t he a real hottie? He’s crazy popular.
Ogami Banri: Definitely looks like he’s a hit with the ladies. Nice to meet you, I’m Ogami Banri.
???: …….

Ogami Banri: Even though I had just introduced myself, Yuki looked really bored and kept staring outside the window.
Ogami Banri: I remember thinking, 'Maybe he’s just shy.’ But nope, he stayed like that for the next thirty minutes.

???: …….
Ogami Banri: Is this dude a fossil or something……?
Ogami’s Friend: How about we get to the real issue at hand here? I brought the song Ogami made for last year’s school fair with me.
Ogami’s Friend: Oh? Wanna give it a listen?
???: …….
Ogami Banri: He put in those earbuds like it was a real pain in the ass just now…….
Ogami Banri: Oh?
Ogami Banri: He finally looked up.
???: Name?
Ogami Banri: The song’s……? I haven’t given it one yet.
???: No. You.
Ogami Banri: Well, that was a little rude. Isn’t he younger than me……? (1)
Ogami Banri: I’m Ogami Banri. I introduced myself earlier, you know.
???: Any other songs?
Ogami Banri: I didn’t bring them with me. They’re at my house, though.
???: Alright then. Let’s go to your house.
Ogami Banri: What?
???: We’re gonna go now.
Ogami’s Friend: Huh!? Wait, hold up!

Ogami Banri: You sure that was okay just now? Your friends–
???: They’re not my friends.
Ogami Banri: ……Name? I mean, what’s your name?
???: …….
Orikasa Yukito: Orikasa Yukito. Everyone calls me 'Yuki’ though.

Ogami Banri: ……And just like that, I met Yuki through my friends. Eventually, we started to write songs together.
Nikaidou Yamato: I can’t believe you decided to work with someone with an attitude like that……. Mad props to you, dude.
Ogami Banri: Yuki’s songs were really good. We both listened to pretty similar stuff, and I was just happy to have Yuki’s voice singing my songs.
Ogami Banri: We were going to be a band at first, but we bumped into all sorts of trouble…….
Nanase Riku: What kind of trouble?
Ogami Banri: We were in dire need for members, so we’d get people to help play for us. But all of them would quit, one after another.

Orikasa Yukito: You don’t have to come anymore.
Bassist: I wouldn’t, even if you asked……!
Ogami Banri: W-wait……! Yuki! Just what didn’t you like about him this time!?
Orikasa Yukito: Way too overbearing.
Ogami Banri: That’s rich, coming from you!
Orikasa Yukito: I was talking about his sound. He was terrible, and yet he played so insistently. That’s not what you wanted either, right Ban?
Ogami Banri: Yeah, but…. You’re supposed to talk about these things and gradually get on the same wavelength…….
Orikasa Yukito: There’s no way he’d understand that.
Ogami Banri: ……Guess we gotta recruit people again…….
Orikasa Yukito: I’m hungry.

Ogami Banri: We’d always end up in fights because of his face too…….

Man: The fuck are you doing, makin’ eyes at my girl? Damn brat!
Woman: You’ve got it wrong! I was just helping out Yuki-kun’s band! He said he liked the way I play the bass….
Orikasa Yukito: Precisely. What I’m after is her bass playing. Neither her heart nor her body are my type.
Ogami Banri: You…. You didn’t have to put it that way…….
Woman: ……You tricked me! You’re awful!
Orikasa Yukito: I didn’t trick you at all. What, was there something you were expecting out of me?
Ogami Banri: You really didn’t have to put it that way…….
Orikasa Yukito: What a pain…….
Woman: Go! Go kill that brat……!!
Man: You fucking bastard……!
Ogami Banri: Please wait! Calm down–
*smack*
Ogami Banri: Ow–
Orikasa Yukito: …….

Orikasa Yukito: What are you thinking about?
Ogami Banri: I was thinking about how we should disband before someone gets shanked because of you.
Orikasa Yukito: I see. I thought of a band name.
Ogami Banri: Were you even listening to me? Ow….
Orikasa Yukito: What?
Ogami Banri: Drinking coffee stings a lot right now.
Orikasa Yukito: That sucks.
Ogami Banri: Wow, this asshole….
Orikasa Yukito: I think you’ll like the band name.
Ogami Banri: What is it?
Orikasa Yukito: Re:vale.

Ogami Banri: Yuki was absolutely terrible at socializing with people, irresponsible, and overall a slob. But when it came to songwriting, he was sincere and worked really hard at it.
Ogami Banri: Worked too hard, even……. He’s the type to get completely and utterly attached to his songs. That’s how we ended up fighting a lot.

Ogami Banri: Wouldn’t it be better if we went with a different phrase here?
Orikasa Yukito: ……Why.
Ogami Banri: I feel like it’s coming on a bit too strong, in terms of flow. Maybe a little more relaxed would be good…… How about that? That thing from before…….
Orikasa Yukito: I’m not changing it.
Ogami Banri: I’m absolutely positive it’s gonna work better. If you don’t lighten it up a bit here, then it’ll kill the chorus. And the chorus is really, really good.
Orikasa Yukito: Shut up.
Ogami Banri: …….
Orikasa Yukito: This song is fine as it is. ……I won’t change anything, even if it’s just shifting a note half a step!

Ogami Banri: ……And right when I thought that, turns out he’s pretty flexible.

Orikasa Yukito: So I tried changing it.
Ogami Banri: It changed.
Orikasa Yukito: How is it?
Ogami Banri: It’s great! It’s just as I imagined! Heck, it’s even better than imagined! You got the refreshing, relaxing feel pat down!
Orikasa Yukito: Heheh….
Ogami Banri: While we’re on a roll, why don’t you complete “We, the Incomplete?” I’m sure the fans will love it if we performed it live.
Orikasa Yukito: I won’t be completing “We, the Incomplete” any time soon.
Ogami Banri: Why not? If you tweak it too much, it’ll go bad.
Orikasa Yukito: It was the first song I wrote. I’m very attached to it.
Orikasa Yukito: If possible, I’d like to keep tweaking it– forever. It’ll change little by little, day by day, into the melody I want it to be.
Orikasa Yukito: And then the next day, something else will sound better to me, so I’ll change it again. I don’t care if it’s never completed. If anything, I prefer it that way.
Ogami Banri: That’s very like you, Yuki. But you know, I want everybody to hear it soon. After all, I was really touched when I first heard it.
Orikasa Yukito: …….
Orikasa Yukito: No. It’s fine as is.
Ogami Banri: Really?
Orikasa Yukito: Yeah…….

Ogami Banri: I think there was a lot on Yuki’s mind back then.
Ogami Banri: As Re:vale put on more and more concerts, we’d get more and more famous. But with that fame came more things that’d exhaust Yuki.
Ogami Banri: The cause was pretty simple, though.
Nanase Riku: Things that’d exhaust Yuki……? What were they……?
Ogami Banri: It was all because of his personality and the way he looked.
Ogami Banri: Regardless of how hard he worked and how good the song was, there would always be dudes who’d trash talk it because they were pissed at Yuki, either because of his appearance or his personality.
Ogami Banri: On the other hand, songs that we didn’t feel too hot about would get rave reviews from our fangirls.
Nikaidou Yamato: So people would judge Yuki-san himself instead of his songs?
Ogami Banri: Yep. You can’t really blame them, though. Not when he looked like that, and had such a sour personality.
Yotsuba Tamaki: Well, I mean…. His visuals come flying at you way before his song does, so…….
Ogami Banri: Even so, Yuki wanted people to look at the songs we wrote, and not at him.
Ogami Banri: That’s why he was pretty troubled back then, in his own little way.

Bassist: I’m not playing with you guys ever again! I don’t wanna play that nitpicky, lameass song anymore! Not if I get bossed around that much either!
Orikasa Yukito: …….
Ogami Banri: You said you liked it! I thought you joined because you heard that song…….
Bassist: Yeah, I liked it. Past tense. But after getting chewed out like that, hearing that song makes me wanna hurl!
Orikasa Yukito: Oh? So other things can come out of that mouth, then? Not just complaints?
Bassist: You bastard……!
Ogami Banri: Stop it!
Bassist: Tch…….
Bassist: Don’t get too carried away now, Yuki! Listen guys, your songs won’t make anyone happy!
*slam*
Orikasa Yukito: …….
Ogami Banri: Haa ……. Guess we gotta start looking again.
Orikasa Yukito: …….
Ogami Banri: ……Don’t let it get to you. If it bothers you though, maybe you should consider fixing that attitude of yours.
Ogami Banri: You’re a downright chatterbox when it comes to music, but you won’t talk about anything else. That’s why people keep misunderstanding you.
Orikasa Yukito: Perhaps.
Ogami Banri: Don’t 'perhaps’ me.
Orikasa Yukito: If I change, then so too will the music I write. Just like a kid who stopped believing in Santa.
Orikasa Yukito: Do you really want to listen to something that boring? I’m disgusted.
Ogami Banri: Hey now, don’t take it out on me. Also, if that’s the case, then just don’t let it bother you in the first place. Fair enough, right?
Orikasa Yukito: It doesn’t bother me. I never believed in their aesthetic sense, and never will. Not even a single bit.
Orikasa Yukito: After all, they think I’m only doing music to be popular. I don’t need to do anything to be popular.
Ogami Banri: That. If they had just sat down and thought about it for a second, then it would’ve been obvious.
Orikasa Yukito: ……I agonize over composing, and everyone dares to think I’m doing it for my own image? (2)
Orikasa Yukito: As if anything good could be born out of those sorts of feelings. How arrogant and conceited.
Orikasa Yukito: I don’t care if they don’t love me. I want everything, from the lowliest of bugs to God himself, to love my songs. Just my songs.
Orikasa Yukito: Ban, am I in the wrong?
Ogami Banri: …….
Orikasa Yukito: I desperately wrote those songs after so many sleepless nights spent thinking, after hours upon hours, after countless fights with you……. And yet….
Orikasa Yukito: Why…. Why must these good-for-nothings touch my songs with their filthy hands?
Ogami Banri: Yuki…….
Orikasa Yukito: Don’t touch them. That’s not what they were written for.
Orikasa Yukito: I only want the people who’ll treasure my songs to listen to them. As for everyone else, I could care less if bees flew into their ears and built a hive so that they’d never hear again.
Ogami Banri: …….
Orikasa Yukito: ……I’m so frustrated…….
Ogami Banri: I pray your songs will never get dirtied, even if they get touched by filthy hands.
Ogami Banri: I pray your songs will never get renounced, even if people renounce you.
Ogami Banri: And I pray that people won’t love your songs just because they love you. (3)
Orikasa Yukito: …….
Ogami Banri: No matter how terrible you are as a person, you’re the only one who can write those songs. And I’ll always want to hear them.
Orikasa Yukito: Ban…….
Ogami Banri: They’re the best songs. That’s why I wanna listen to them.
Orikasa Yukito: …….
Ogami Banri: Got it, Yuki?
Orikasa Yukito: Yeah…….
Ogami Banri: Let’s complete it– “We, the Incomplete.”
Ogami Banri: And starting next concert, we should stop playing instruments and just sing. Let go of all of the things you were fixated on.
Ogami Banri: You get way too attached to your songs. I think it’s best if you let go, and distance your heart and your hands from finished works. That’s why we should put some space between you and your songs.
Orikasa Yukito: ……So no more live instrumentation?
Ogami Banri: Yep. That solves the band problem too.
Orikasa Yukito: So you want us to stand on stage and just sing? That’s it? Shall I play the tambourine while we’re at it?
Ogami Banri: No…….
Ogami Banri: Let’s dance. Just like how idols do. I did it at the last school festival, and it was pretty well received.
Orikasa Yukito: ……Won’t it look lame?
Ogami Banri: We gotta dance well enough that it won’t look lame.

Ogami Banri: And that’s how Yuki and I became the idol group Re:vale.

To be continued….

Translator notes/comments:

thank u @kuriiii for proofreading!

(2) hyouka means evaluation/how other people assess you/etc but i figured this is p close and easier to integrate
(3) ok this confused me a little

Chapter 7: Re:vale

Yuki and Ban

Tsukumo Ryou: This tequila was born from agave from a moonlit night. The past, present, and future are all intertwined. Cheers, Momo.
Momo: ……Cheers.

Ogami Banri: Let’s dance. Just like how idols do. I did it at the last school festival, and it was pretty well received.
Orikasa Yukito: ……Won’t it look lame?
Ogami Banri: We gotta dance well enough that it won’t look lame.

Ogami Banri: And that’s how Yuki and I became the idol group Re:vale.

Yuki: …….
Sporting Goods Store Employee: Excuse me…. You’re Yuki from Re:vale, right?
Yuki: Yeah, the bootleg version. The beauty mark is on the wrong side.
Sporting Goods Store Employee: Huh?
Yuki: May I have one of these, please?
Sporting Goods Store Employee: O-of course! Thank you very much!
Yuki: …….
Yuki: “We, the Incomplete”…. I forgot that was Momo’s favorite song. ……Even though he was so happy about it….
Yuki: If something falls down next to me while I’m singing that song…. I can’t. Not again– I wouldn’t be able to bear it.
Yuki: ……I wonder…. Does he want to sing it, or does he want to listen to it?
Yuki: I’m sure he can’t decide.

Tsukumo Ryou: Now, speak– Momo.
Tsukumo Ryou: How did you feel when you grovelled? Did you feel wretched? Frustrated? Did you want to cry? Did you stick out your little red tongue?
Momo: I grovelled because I was one-sidedly begging him to listen to my demands, even though I didn’t have anything to do for him or give in return.
Momo: And no, I didn’t stick out my tongue. I won’t be doing it either, when I do it to you.
Tsukumo Ryou: Oh…?
Momo: Why do you look so bored…….
Tsukumo Ryou: Tell me, why did you beg? Because you wanted to be an idol? Since you’d definitely get your name out there if you used Yuki?
Momo: I get why you’d think that. I’ve gotten that countless times. But….
Momo: It’s just…. I didn’t want to see Re:vale come to an end in that state.

Momo: Re:vale……?
Ruri: Yep! They’re a super hot duo!
Ruri: My friend can’t make it to their concert, so you should come with me instead! It’s their third anniversary concert!
Momo: Aw, but everyone in the audience is gonna be girls.
Ruri: Guys come to watch too! You’ve got tons of time now since you got recommended into a college, so you should hang out with your Nee-chan once in awhile! (1)
Momo: You know, my heart is still wounded since we didn’t win nationals…….
Ruri: Well, there isn’t much you can do about it since you got injured while sliding. You wouldn’t have been able to play soccer again if you had kept running. (2)
Momo: …….
Ruri: You can’t stay sad about it forever, okay? Come with me to the concert! It’ll take your mind off of it.
Ruri: I’ve helped you throughout your life as a soccer player, so now it’s time for you to help me with being a stan!
Ruri: This one’s Ban-san! He’s tall, gentle, and just like a fresh of breath air! I’m a fan of Ban-san!
Momo: Oh? He looks like a good person. This dude looks like a real player though.
Ruri: That’s Yuki-san. Yeah, I don’t really like him. He’s more popular than Ban-san, even though he’s fought with his fangirls before!
Momo: ……! Ahahaha!
Ruri: What?
Momo: I’m sure he’s not a bad person, but people hate him over stuff like that?
Momo: Must be tough being an idol…….

Momo: Wow, there’s so many people…. You sure they’re an indies band?
Ruri: They are! Aren’t they amazing? Come on, let’s get closer to the front!
Momo: Hey, don’t push me! The girls behind me won’t be able to see if I stand in front–
Audience: Kyaaaaa……!
Ruri: The song changed! Wah! It’s gonna start soon!
Ogami Banri: Good evening! We’re Re:vale!
Orikasa Yukito: …….
Audience: Kyaaaaa……!
Audience: Yuki-san……!
Audience: Ban-san……!
Ogami Banri: Thanks for coming out to see us tonight. We’ll be starting with a classic Re:vale song. If this is your first time hearing it, I hope you’ll remember it!
Ogami Banri: “We, the Incomplete.”
Momo: …….

Momo: ……To be honest, I wasn’t interested in them at all. But I was overwhelmed in an instant.
Momo: The music shook the entire venue. The bright lights and cheers from the audience came at me full force– I felt something well up inside me, like it was filling me up.
Tsukumo Ryou: Similar to how you fill a bell pepper with meat?
Momo: Haha…. You don’t get moved very easily, do you? Like, have you ever watched a beautiful sunset and felt overwhelmed with emotion before?
Momo: Or met someone really amazing, and got super nervous all of a sudden? Or floored the gas pedal with all of your might and went at full speed? Or cheered in victory when you threw a shot just the way you wanted to?
Tsukumo Ryou: Unfortunately, that doesn’t ring a bell.
Momo: Well, all of those feelings hit me at once. And at the same time, how should I put it…. It felt like they knew me.
Tsukumo Ryou: Like they knew you, Momo?
Momo: Have you never felt that way before, Ryou-san?
Momo: Like a line from a movie, sentence from a book, or a lyric from a song was talking about you?
Momo: All of the things you couldn’t put into words are right there– ‘That! Exactly that!’ It’s that feeling. It numbing, exciting, makes you wanna reach out to it.
Momo: It’s that feeling when all of the stuff you were frustrated at and couldn’t make clear and were looking away from just slam into you head-on– and you feel like you’re about to cry.
Momo: Do you know what I’m talking about, Ryou-san?
Tsukumo Ryou: ……I’ve never felt much empathy for others, so not really.
Momo: You poor thing…. You’ve never experienced anything that amazing, huh.
Tsukumo Ryou: …….
Momo: I won’t forget that day for the rest of my life. It was like an electric shock– it jump started my still heart back to life.
Momo: I went to nationals for soccer, but I got injured right before final match. Right when I really wanted to do my best, I couldn’t.
Momo: It took me a really long time before I was fully recovered……. I lost a lot of time back then. I had felt like my dreams were never gonna come true.
Momo: I started to hate God, and the future terrified me. My heart would wrench in pain every time I saw the words 'dreams,’ 'victory,’ or 'pro.’
Momo: But the moment I heard that song, all of my frustration and sadness were swept away.
Momo: Like I had gotten washed clean by the waves.

Ogami Banri: Yuki! Hey, Yuki. It’s addressed to Re:vale, but can I take this fan letter?
Orikasa Yukito: I’m sleepy…. Sure.
Ogami Banri: Come on, you should read it! It’ll definitely leave an impression on you too.
Orikasa Yukito: Hmm? Was there a picture of a girl who’s your type inside?
Ogami Banri: It was from a guy. Well, I didn’t get the letter directly from them, but it sounds like it was written by a dude.
Ogami Banri: He didn’t leave a name, but….. He said he was so moved after listening to “We, the Incomplete” that he cried.
Orikasa Yukito: ……I see…. Give it here.
Ogami Banri: It’s long, so you better read all of it! I almost cried reading it.
Ogami Banri: He was working really hard for his club at school, but then he got injured during a really important match and his team lost.
Ogami Banri: As he listened to “We, the Incomplete,” all of the sadness and frustration he had tried so hard not to think about just welled up, and he ended up crying….
Ogami Banri: But he thinks he can keep on moving forward now! 'Thank you for writing this song,’ he said.
Ogami Banri: He wrote a lot more about how happy he is…. I didn’t know we had fans that’d accept us so honestly and frankly.
Ogami Banri: Our song reached someone and helped them with their life, just like that…. It’s like a miracle……. I’m so happy…….
Ogami Banri: Even though I fought with my family and decided not to go to college, I’m glad to be part of Re:vale……. It more than makes up for all of the rough patches I’ve gone through…….
Ogami Banri: Yuki? Are you reading it?
Ogami Banri: ……Yuki?
Ogami Banri: ……No way. Are you crying?

Ogami Banri: I think Yuki was really happy. This was a song he composed with care and really treasured, and here was someone who treasured it too.
Ogami Banri: It left a really deep impression on me as well. There wasn’t anything I wanted more than for people people to be happy to hear my songs.
Ogami Banri: That was what I had really wanted all along– not money, or reputation.
Ogami Banri: I just wanted someone who’d earnestly listen to the songs we’d worked so hard to compose and understand them. I just wanted someone to be happy to listen to them.
Rokuya Nagi: OH……. Perhaps Haruki was the same.
Osaka Sougo: My uncle as well…….
Ogami Banri: I’m sure they were. It’s kinda embarrassing for an amateur like me to talk big like this, though.
Ogami Banri: That night was a little weird…. We fooled around, like we were high schoolers again. We weren’t afraid of anything. (3)

Ogami Banri: Ahaha! Ow, ow! I was just trying to take a pic!
Orikasa Yukito: ……Ugh, you’re the worst!
Ogami Banri: Ahaha! I’m gonna treasure this letter. Alright, give it back.
Orikasa Yukito: I’m taking it.
Ogami Banri: You’re the one who said I could take it! What are you even gonna do with it, Yuki? Read it at home and cry all over again?
Orikasa Yukito: I wasn’t crying! Haha…. Aw, shut up.
Ogami Banri: Ahaha. Hey, don’t hit me!

Orikasa Yukito: Let’s do it properly from here on out.
Ogami Banri: So you weren’t doing it properly, huh. I had a feeling.
Orikasa Yukito: Really?
Ogami Banri: 'Why am I even dancing?’ was written all over your face.
Orikasa Yukito: I guess so. They’ll scream if I dance. That’s what I was thinking as I looked at them.
Ogami Banri: Man, you’re rude……. Everyone really loves you, alright? They all hum along to your songs.
Orikasa Yukito: That’s true…….
Orikasa Yukito: To be honest, I was thinking of quitting. There wasn’t anything wrong, per se, but just for some reason or another…….
Ogami Banri: …….
Orikasa Yukito: But I’m glad I didn’t quit– I feel like I can do anything right now. Let’s do it, Ban.
Orikasa Yukito: I know we can become the best in the world. Let’s sing together, until the day we die.
Ogami Banri: Yeah.

Ogami Banri: Re:vale started to get more and more famous from there on out. However, little by little, we started to diverge a little.

To be continued….

A Chance Meeting

Orikasa Yukito: I know we can become the best in the world. Let’s sing together, until the day we die.
Ogami Banri: Yeah.

Ogami Banri: Re:vale started to get more and more famous from there on out. However, little by little, we started to diverge a little.
Izumi Iori: Diverge…?
Ogami Banri: Yeah. Part of it was me.
Ogami Banri: As Re:vale got bigger, more and more people got involved. I found myself liking behind-the-scenes work more.
Ogami Banri: ‘How do we make getting into the premises easier? How do we make getting tickets easier? How many people do we need for that, and how do we arrange for that?’ Those sorts of things.
Nanase Riku: So kinda like what you do for agency……?
Ogami Banri: Mhmm. I started to like running the concert itself more than I liked singing or composing.
Ogami Banri: Now that I look back upon it, I wonder if that letter had sated my hunger to compose. I had felt really accomplished after reading it.
Ogami Banri: On the other hand, I started to get more interested in figuring out how to make our audience happy in more direct ways.
Izumi Mitsuki: ……What about Yuki-san? Did you talk to him about this?
Ogami Banri: I couldn’t. I don’t think the thought ever crossed his mind. After all, he’s a man who can’t live without his guitar.
Ogami Banri: There was another goal I had in mind too.
Nikaidou Yamato: Goal?
Ogami Banri: I wanted to make it so Yuki would be able to live off of music. There’s no way he’d survive in normal society. A salaryman like him would be fired in three days.
Yotsuba Tamaki: But he taught me a lot of stuff though.
Ogami Banri: I think it’s because he sees a bit of his younger self in you. Just for the record, you’re a thousand times better than Yuki was at your age, Tamaki-kun.
Yotsuba Tamaki: I got praised!
Osaka Sougo: Good for you!
Ogami Banri: ……He’d be able to live freely and true to himself in the entertainment industry. That’s why I wanted us to debut one way or another.
Ogami Banri: But as the number of fans kept increasing, we couldn’t control them ourselves……. There was even this awful incident called 'Bloody Eve.’
Yotsuba Tamaki: What is that!? Is it a scary story……?
Ogami Banri: This guy thought Yuki stole his girl, so he brought a group along with him and barged on stage during our Christmas concert.
Izumi Mitsuki: He barged on stage!? I didn’t know this kinda stuff happened in the indies!
Ogami Banri: No, no. I think this only applies to Yuki……. Anyways, that was when we talked to Momo for the first time.
Nanase Riku: Huh!? No way, did Momo jump in too?
Ogami Banri: He gallantly leapt on stage and came to our help. I’ll never forget the way he rampaged back then.

Momo: The fuck are you bastards doing!! You dumbass…!

Ogami Banri: Yuki and I secretly called him 'Mad Dog’ from the shadows.

Momo: ……I’m sorry! I made such a mess of your stage! I’m really, really sorry……!!
Orikasa Yukito: The Mad Dog had rampaged so viciously, and yet he’s desperately bowing to us right now……?
Ogami Banri: Shh! Um, you come to watch our shows a lot, right? Along with a girl.
Momo: H-How did you know!?
Ogami Banri: Dudes are kinda rare in the audience. I thought you were on top of your life or something, but I heard that’s your older sister? (1)
Momo: Y-y-you know about that too…….
Ogami Banri: No need to be scared. Are you hurt anywhere? I can give you my contact information in case you go to the hospital or the police.
Momo: Huh……!? Oh no, absolutely not! I don’t need it! I’m going home! Please excuse me……!
Ogami Banri: Wait, wait!
Momo: Gyaaaaa!
Ogami Banri: S-sorry! Did it hurt where I grabbed you just now?
Momo: N-no! I was just surprised you touched me! Wow, Ban-san, you’re super hot…….
Ogami Banri: Ahaha…. Thanks. Do you mind writing your name and contact information here, if your arm doesn’t hurt too much?
Momo: gasp ……. Your notebook’s hot too…….
Ogami Banri: ……I bought it for 1000 yen at the bookstore. I’m really sorry. I’ll thank you properly sometime–
Momo: I don’t need any thanks! Because Re:vale’s concerts always make me really happy!
Orikasa Yukito: …….
Orikasa Yukito: Hey.
Momo: ……Eek! A hottie is approaching me……!
Orikasa Yukito: Have you ever written us a letter?
Momo: Huh……?
Orikasa Yukito: This handwriting…….
Orikasa Yukito: How do you read the name written on this letter?
Sunohara Momose: ……. Sunohara Momose.
Orikasa Yukito: Sunohara Momose…….
Orikasa Yukito: ……. I see…….
Orikasa Yukito: Thanks, Momo-kun.

Tsukumo Ryou: ……So how much did you pay the actors to play the part of a rival group and jump on stage, Momo?
Momo: It wasn’t planned! And no, I didn’t pay them!
Tsukumo Ryou: There you go again. Weren’t you just vigilantly watching out for chances to get closer to them?
Momo: I wasn’t! You don’t understand how fans feel at all, Ryou-san! I can’t believe you’re trying to be an entertainment agency president like that…. Don’t make me laugh!
Momo: I was so nervous, I thought I was gonna hurl my guts out……. My hands were shaking and I was sweating waterfalls…. Ah……. Just remembering it makes me feel so embarrassed.
Tsukumo Ryou: So it was embarrassing?
Momo: I mean, I completely lost it in front of the two stars I looked up to! The two of them were really cool and really nice…….
Tsukumo Ryou: So, when are we getting to the grovelling part? I’ve already finished excavating all of the fossils…. (2)
Momo: Well, if you don’t understand all of Re:vale’s good points then there’s no point in me talking about that! And you’re the one who asked about it, okay!
Tsukumo Ryou: Momo, you’re drunk, aren’t you?
Momo: Haa ……. Ban-san and Yuki-san were super ultra hyper cool…….
Momo: ……And yet, why did something like that happen…….

To be continued….

We, the Incomplete

Ogami Banri: I think it was around five years after we formed Re:vale…. One day, a man named Kujou gave us his business card.
Nanase Riku: Kujou…….
Ogami Banri: He told us that he liked us after watching one of our concerts. I was pretty sure that he had his sights set on Yuki all along, though.
Ogami Banri: He said he wanted to talk to Yuki, and I figured that this might just be our chance to debut, so I told Yuki to go.
Ogami Banri: When Yuki came back, he only said one word….

Orikasa Yukito: Gross.
Ogami Banri: ……. That’s it…?
Orikasa Yukito: No way.
Ogami Banri: Aw come on, I thought I told you to be polite and courteous to him!
Ogami Banri: I can go corporate if it really comes down to it, but you’re pretty much stuck being financially dependent and leeching off of others! And you don’t have any patience, civility, or common sense, which I know you’re aware of!
Orikasa Yukito: But you see, that man went ahead and already made plans about how to make an ideal idol to surpass Zero…….
Orikasa Yukito: I’m not a robot. ……Though. Did you want to debut at his agency, Ban?
Orikasa Yukito: If so, then I’ll give it some thought…….
Ogami Banri: …….
Ogami Banri: Haha…. Now you’re saying it? I’m sure he’s already moved onto the next guy. Let’s just wait until we find someone who’s on the same page as us.
Ogami Banri: However, you better not call them ‘gross’ or say 'no way’ to their face next time. Got it? I bet you said it to Kujou-san.
Orikasa Yukito: I suppose.
Ogami Banri: How’d he react?
Orikasa Yukito: He just smiled…. The entire time.

Ogami Banri: ……But just as I started to forget about the whole ordeal, Kujou contacted me and asked to meet me in private.
Nanase Riku: He contacted you, Banri-san? For what purpose…….
Ogami Banri: I guess he was trying to get me to persuade him instead. Told me stuff like, 'You’re second-rate. Don’t drag Yuki down.’
Nanase Riku: He said that to you too, Banri-san!?
Ogami Banri: Yeah…. I was pretty shocked, but I understood.
Ogami Banri: At that time, I had more interest in managing events than I had emotional attachment to our songs.
Ogami Banri: I really treasured Re:vale, but I couldn’t really say that I was singing as earnestly as Yuki. It was different.
Ogami Banri: Even so, I didn’t want to leave Yuki in Kujou’s hands. I just had a bad feeling about it…….
Ogami Banri: But right around then, someone from Okazaki Agency contacted us.

Okazaki Rinto: Hello, I’m Okazaki Agency’s Okazaki Rinto.
Okazaki Rinto: My older brother is the president there. We’re a tiny agency that started up recently, but how about releasing a CD under us?
Orikasa Yukito: Haa ……. You. How old are you?
Okazaki Rinto: T-twenty two. I just graduated.
Ogami Banri: Cut it, Yuki! Cool, we’re around the same age then. So, you watched our concert?
Okazaki Rinto: I’ve come to watch countless times! Re:vale will change the Japan’s music industry! By all means, we would love it if you signed onto our agency as our very first stars–
Ogami Banri: First……?
Okazaki Rinto: Ah, ah! We’ve got a long ways to go in terms of capital, but we have lots of enthusiasm to go around!
Okazaki Rinto: If you’re interested, please! Please…. Contact our agency!
Sunohara Momose: Ban-san, is it okay if I leave the equipment here?
Sunohara Momose: Ah! Sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt!
Ogami Banri: It’s fine. And thank you. You should come to the afterparty once you’re done.
Sunohara Momose: Oh no, I could never! See ya……!
Orikasa Yukito: Wanna hear our new song?
Sunohara Momose: What!?
Orikasa Yukito: We’ll let you listen to it if you come to the afterparty.
Sunohara Momose: What!? What!!? Ah…. I’m afraid I have to refuse! I’ll wait 'til I can hear it as part of the audience!
Sunohara Momose: See ya!
Orikasa Yukito: ……Momo-kun is definitely a fan of ours, but he always runs off somewhere.
Ogami Banri: He’s very reserved.
Orikasa Yukito: Even though he rampaged like that on stage? What a strange kid.
Okazaki Rinto: Is that boy a member of another group?
Ogami Banri: He’s a college student. We ask him to help sometimes when we’re shorthanded.
Ogami Banri: Okazaki-san. Thank you for talking to us about a CD debut. Please give us time to think about it.
Okazaki Rinto: Yes, of course! Thank you very much!
Orikasa Yukito: Heheh…. I like you.
Okazaki Rinto: Huh?
Orikasa Yukito: Okazaki-san, you’re so short, stubby, and cute– mmph!
Ogami Banri: What he means is that you look like a very reliable person!
Okazaki Rinto: I-I’m glad! I’m afraid I won’t be able to stay until the very end because of business, but I’ll come to watch your concert again!

Orikasa Yukito: Let’s start with “We, the Incomplete.”
Ogami Banri: For Okazaki-san?
Orikasa Yukito: Duh. That’s the song he’d want to hear the most, if he’s a fan of Re:vale.

Ogami Banri: That would be the last time “We, the Incomplete” would be sung on stage. Yuki and Momo-kun haven’t performed it either, to this day.
Osaka Sougo: Why is that so? It’s such a good song…….
Ogami Banri: Because he’s traumatized.
Ogami Banri: The light fixture fell on me when we were singing “We, the Incomplete.” I was taken away in an ambulance.

Audience: Kyaaaaa ….
Audience: Re:vale……!
Audience: ……Re:vale’s the best!
Sunohara Momose: Yuki-san! Ban-san……! You guys are super duper cool!
*crash*
Sunohara Momose: ……!?
Sunohara Momose: You’re kidding me…….

Momo: ……The cheers turned into screams.
Momo: Nobody knew what was going on. Ban-san had collapsed on stage. Yuki-san was screaming Ban-san’s name, over and over again.
Momo: People started to gather, and the lights went dim……. Everyone in the audience was panicking, in complete disarray. But even so, they made us exit the premises.
Momo: Everyone was crying, everyone was praying. 'I pray it wasn’t a serious injury’…. 'I pray those two are unscathed’…….
Tsukumo Ryou: Did those prayers go through?
Momo: I don’t know……. There weren’t any updates after that because Ban-san was the one who did all of their PR.
Momo: Word spread, from staff members who were really close to them, that Ban-san was dead…. That it was only a flesh wound….. No one could tell the lies from the truth…….
Momo: Several weeks later, I finally heard it from an acquaintance. They told me that Ban-san’s face had gotten injured, and it bothered him a lot…. And that he had gone missing…….
Momo: Yuki-san was going to quit music. ……Re:vale was going to disband. That was a fact.

Ogami Banri: And this is where Yuki and I as Re:vale come to an end.

Momo: And so, I went to see Yuki-san.

Sunohara Momose: Yuki-san…….
Orikasa Yukito: …….
Sunohara Momose: U-um…. ……I heard about Ban-san…….
Orikasa Yukito: ……I see.
Sunohara Momose: Is it true you’re gonna quit singing……?
Orikasa Yukito: ……There’s no point in me continuing.
Sunohara Momose: …….
Sunohara Momose: Please don’t let it end…….
Sunohara Momose: I’m begging you, please don’t let it end……. (1)
Orikasa Yukito: …….

Yotsuba Tamaki: ……So, Ban-chan. You stayed quiet and disappeared so Yukirin wouldn’t haveta listen to Kujou, right?
Ogami Banri: Yeah. I was young back then, and I didn’t know what else to do. I really didn’t want Yuki to get chained down because of me.
Nanase Riku: You never thought that Yuki-san would quit singing……?
Ogami Banri: I didn’t. That was the one thing I was sure of.
Ogami Banri: That man can’t live without singing. I’m sure he was hurt when I disappeared. But even with those wounds, he can’t live without singing.
Ogami Banri: That, and I figured that the people around Yuki wouldn’t be able to leave him alone.
Ogami Banri: I was surprised to learn that Momo-kun was the one who got Yuki to hold a mic again, though.

Sunohara Momose: Yuki-san……! I’m begging you, please don’t quit! Please don’t let Re:vale end!
Orikasa Yukito: You don’t ever give up, do you……? Say it however much you want, but I’ve already decided, Momo-kun.
Sunohara Momose: ……I wouldn’t be saying anything if this was something the two of you decided together! But this…. This is just too much!
Orikasa Yukito: Tell that to Ban…. ……Don’t say this to me, please.
Sunohara Momose: I’m sorry! I’m sorry……!
Orikasa Yukito: I quit……. No matter what you say, Re:vale is over.
Sunohara Momose: It’s not over yet! Please! Please think it over again! I’ll do anything, so please……!
Orikasa Yukito: No. I don’t want to sing all by myself……
Sunohara Momose: If…. If that’s the case……. If that’s the case, then I’ll sing with you!
Orikasa Yukito: …….The nerve! As if the likes of you could replace Ban!
Sunohara Momose: …I know, but it’s just too sad if this continues on! That’s not what Re:vale’s about!
Sunohara Momose: Yuki-san and Ban-san would always keep on singing, no matter how sad or painful it got! Isn’t that right?
Orikasa Yukito: ……Leave!
Sunohara Momose: No! Please……!
Orikasa Yukito: Please, just let me give up……!
Sunohara Momose: I’m begging you, please don’t give up……!

Tsukumo Ryou: ……So, did grovelling work?
Momo: I visited him for a month. I thought it’d take a lot longer, to be honest.
Tsukumo Ryou: Why did you go to such great lengths?
Momo: Haha…. Yuki-san asked me the same thing.

Orikasa Yukito: ……Why would you go that far?
Sunohara Momose: Why…? Because I didn’t want it to happen…….
Orikasa Yukito: You’re rather selfish, aren’t you?
Sunohara Momose: It was just too sad……. That I would never hear it again……. I couldn’t believe it, I didn’t want to believe it…….
Sunohara Momose: My lifelong dream had come to an abrupt end…. And I didn’t want Re:vale to end like that too. (2)

To be continued….

Translation notes/comments:

thank u @kuriiii for proofreadin!!!!!!!!!1

(1) went w/ the literal because 終わらせない/やめない/諦めない are thrown arnd a lot here and i wanted the three words to have different/distinct meanings frm each other
(2) してしまう has a bit of a ‘this wasn’t supposed to happen’ connotation, and given what we know about momo’s professional soccer aspirations, i think ‘abrupt’ is a p appropriate insertion given context+connotation

As usual, if you see any mistakes/mistranslations/etc, please message me!

Thank you for reading!!
