Can/Could

Модальный глагол сап выражает:

1. 1) объективную возможность «мочь», «быть в состоянии»: it can be done an once — это можно сделать сразу; you cannot go there by bus — автобусом вы туда не доедете; can you see him? — вы его ви­дите?; it was so dark we could see nothing — было так темно, что мы ничего не видели; 2) умение; способность «мочь», «уметь»: she can't cook but she can make her own dresses — она не умеет готовить, но она может сама шить себе платья; he could read and write when he was five — он умел читать и писать в возрасте пяти лет;

2. 1) предположение (обычно с перфектным инфинитивом в ут­вердительном предложении): one of the prisoners escaped yesterday — he can/could be anywhere by now — один из заключенных вчера бе­жал — сейчас он может быть где угодно; they can/could have walked, it isn't far— возможно, они пошли пешком— это недалеко; 2) со­мнение (в вопросительных и отрицательных предложениях): can it be true? — неужели это правда?; she can't have meant it — она не мог­ла говорить это серьезно.

В разговорной речи can/could может выражать значение просьбы в вопросительных предложениях и разрешение в утвердительных и отрицательных: can I have some more bread, please? — дайте мне еще хлеба, пожалуйста / передайте мне, пожалуйста, хлеб; you can go now,— теперь можете идти; you cannot play football in England on Sundays — по воскресеньям в Англии в футбол не играют / в воскре­сенье в Англии не разрешается (нельзя) играть в футбол.

Этот глагол употребляется в сочетаниях can but и cannot but: we can but try — можно все-таки попытаться; I cannot but feel that it is a risky affair — я не могу не чувствовать, что это рискованное пред­приятие; в сочетании cannot help + V-ing: we could not help admiring her — мы не могли не восхищаться ею; в сочетании as can be: (эмоц.- усилит.) «очень», «чрезвычайно» и т. п.: she is as pleased as can be — она очень (страшно) довольна. Примеры:

(1) Pickering:... I rather fancied my self because I can pronounce twenty-four distinct vowel sounds; but your hundred and thirty beat me. I can't hear a bit of difference between most of them. (Shaw)
