May/Might

Модальный глагол may выражает:

1) предположение, вероятность, возможность: this may or may not be true — может быть, это правда, а может быть, и нет; he may miss his train — он может опоздать на поезд; she may be ill — она, возмож­но, больна; he may have lost his way — возможно, он заблудился; you may have left the tickets at home — возможно (может быть), ты забы­ла билеты дома.

2) сомнение, неуверенность: he may not arrive this afternoon — сегодня днем он, может быть, и не приедет; the handwriting may be his, but the signature certainly is not — почерк может быть и его, но подпись во всяком случае — нет; в вопросительном предложении — просьбу: may I come and see you? — можно мне вас навестить? may he go now? — можно ему уйти?

3) в утвердительном предложении — разрешение: you may stay, if you like — если хотите, можете остаться; I shall come later, if I may — я приду позднее, если можно (если вы разрешите).

May с простым инфинитивом относится к настоящему и будуще­му времени, с перфектным инфинитивом — к прошедшему.

Форма might относится к прошедшему времени и выражает те же значения: it might be about midnight when I came home — я думаю, было около полуночи, когда я вернулся домой; he might have arrived in time if he had run quicker — он мог успеть вовремя, если бы (он) бежал быстрее; he was told that he might take the book with him — ему разрешили взять книгу с собой. Кроме того, might употребляется с простым инфинитивом, выражая предположение, относящееся к на­стоящему или будущему, однако указывает на меньшую уверенность предположения, на сомнение: this medicine may/might cure your cough — это лекарство, может быть, и вылечит вас от кашля; how old may/might she be? — сколько же ей может быть лет?; we may /might as well stay — мы, пожалуй, можем и остаться.

Would — многозначный и многофункциональный глагол. Should

Should выполняет целый ряд функций, выступая как вспомога­тельный и модальный глагол.

Should как вспомогательный глагол употребляется:

1. для выражения будущего времени в придаточном дополнитель­ном, если главное предложение употреблено в прошедшем времени: I told them I didn't know when I should be back. — Я сказал им, что не знаю, когда я вернусь.

2. для образования форм сослагательного наклонения:

1)1-го лица в главном предложении при наличии придаточ­ного условия: I should buy the book if it were on sale. — Я бы купил эту книгу, если бы она была в продаже.

2)в придаточном цели после союзов lest, that, so that: Leave him a note lest he should forget to come to the station in time. — Оставьте ему записку, чтобы он не забыл вовремя приехать на вокзал.

Модальный глагол should выражает долженствование в форме ре­комендации, совета, пожелания: следует, должен, необходимо и т. п.: you should keep bed — тебе следует лежать в постели. В сочетании с перфектным инфинитивом этот глагол означает невыполненное по­желание, совет и т. п.: you should have taken pricautions. — Тебе сле­довало принять меры предосторожности. Should может выражать пред­положение: There shouldn't be any difficulties — никаких затруднений, по-видимому, не будет / не должно быть никаких затруднений; that should suit you — это вам, должно быть (наверное), подойдет.

Should употребляется в эмоционально-усилительном значении, выражая удивление, возмущение и т. п.: why should I go there? — за­чем это мне нужно туда идти? / с какой стати я туда пойду?; how should I know? — откуда мне знать?; it is strange that she should object — странно, что она возражает.
